"60th Anniversary of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights"
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights written on 10th December 1948 is the
foundation of International human rights law, the first universal statement on the
basic principles of inalienable human rights, and a common standard of achievement
for all peoples and all nations.
It was the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, almost 60 years ago, that first
recognized what have now become universal values: human rights are inherent to all
and the concern of the whole of the international community. Drafted by representatives
of all regions and legal traditions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has stood
the test of time and resisted attacks based on "relativism". The Declaration and its core
values, including non-discrimination, equality, fairness and universality, apply to
everyone, everywhere and always.
It is for this reason that the European Union will actively participate in the "60th
Anniversary of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights" on 10th December
2008.
It wishes to affirm its commitment to the values conveyed by the Declaration and
reaffirmed in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
To raise public awareness about the relevance of these values and to highlight this
event, the European Commission invites the major public television channels, partners of
the day, to distribute for free six clips of 30 seconds each, entitled
"Human rights concern us all"
These clips are meant to be broadcasted during the six days preceding 10th
December 2008.
