Torture marks one for life and leaves deep psychological wounds! Although numerous countries have already ratified the United Nations’ Convention in support of victims of torture, this practice continues to spread in many countries. Increasingly sophisticated methods are used, leaving the victims, their families, and even entire parts of some societies with deep trauma. Often hypocritically ignored, but also carefully concealed, torture is a social phenomenon, which exists since the earliest times. Every possible practice, from the most barbarous to the most technically advanced, has been or is still being used to implement it.

Therefore, the European Union is taking an active part in the “International Day in Support of Victims of Torture“ on June 26. It is an opportunity to make the public aware of the fact that torture still exists today and that the European Commission supports many projects, which fight against torture and bring aid to its victims.

In order to inform the general public of this day and to give all its human dimension to this event, the European Commission has invited the main public television channels, partners of the day, to broadcast at no cost a 45 second clip entitled “ Fighting torture together! ”.

Synopsis
In a living room, a whole family is settled happily around a table for their Sunday meal; at one end our main character: Alex. The grandmother brings a dish of chicken to the table. Alex’s wife starts carving off a drumstick. At that instant, the noise of the split flesh and the reflection of the knife make Alex recoil violently on his chair. Frightened, frozen, he has just remembered the sharpened steel of another knife… a tool of torture.

Flash back
Forward tracking in the dark corridor of a jail. We can hear screams and discover Alex sitting on a rickety chair. His fists are tied to the armchairs and his feet, to the legs of the chair.
Two men are next to him.
The first one smacks him, while the second walks around him playing with a leather stick, which he slaps in his hand. He comes closer and with a sharp kick, he breaks the back legs of the chair. Alex’s body falls to the ground, feet and fists bound. He yells… Alex is taken away by two guards. They go down a long corridor. We discover cells along the corridor and their prisoners, men and women of different ethnic groups.

Back at the table Alex lies on the floor beside his chair. The others, crowded around him, comfort him, aware of his pain and try to help by their warm presence.
